¡Bienvenido a Flores & Tikal!

Set on its very own island, Flores is a quaint little town with admirable charm, its winding cobbled streets are lined with colourful, crumbling buildings and is the perfect place to wander around with your camera in hand. Stay in one of our favourite hostel's in Guatemala, the gringo haven of Los Amigos is the perfect place to base yourself.

Find your perfect spot for some lunch, while overlooking the enchanting Lake Peten Itza, explore the narrow streets and try your luck with the locals on the Basketball court or like me, join in with a local 5 a side Football match! Then indulge yourself in some mouthwatering street food as the locals set up their stalls on the waterfront, just in time for the sunset!

Now for the main event, as pretty and undeniably charming Flores is, the main reason that travellers visit is to explore the mammoth Mayan ruins of Tikal!

A short shuttle bus journey will bring you deep into the jungle, and amidst this dense jungle lies the Tomb Raider-esque ruins of Tikal. You are led by a very experienced guide throughout the dusty paths of the jungle floor, as he tells you tales of years gone by, with the deafening noise of the howler monkeys swinging from vine to vine just above your heads, being an ever-present entertainment! Throughout this, the guide will explain to you in great detail the history of Tikal and the Mayans!

You won't have to look far for someone selling this tour, but you do have a few options of when to go, with sunrise and sunset being the most popular. We chose the tour that arrives just after sunrise, partly because this was a little cheaper and partly because we had heard that this time was just as good as sunrise! As incredible as this tour was, in hindsight I would try to do it at sunrise or sunset, to experience this mysterious place at its best! That being said, we do believe that Tikal actually gives Chichen Itza a run for its money for being one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

Before you visit for yourself, here is a look from behind the lens..
