¡Bienvenidos a Isla de Ometepe!
This is a truly remarkable place, situated on its very own island in the middle of the enormous Lake Nicaragua. Isla de Ometepe is made up of dense jungle, luring natural pools & waterfalls and more importantly, two twin volcanoes! Making it almost resemble a prehistoric island!
Your journey to Isla de Ometepe will start off by boarding a rickety old boat, cluttered with locals and the odd backpacker, obviously. Yes, it is as glamorous as it sounds! However, as soon as you approach Ometepe, you are treated to the astonishing sight of the twin volcanoes dominating the skyline, rising high above the engulfing jungle as the island gets closer and closer!
You are welcomed to the island by the town of Moyogalpa, now this town isn't too easy on the eye, very touristy and filled with restaurants, bars and touting tour agents. It is nice to spend some time here to explore this side of the island and it is home to the prominent Volcan Concepcion, but my advice would be to explore the island to its full extent and do not just settle on seeing just one side of it! There are many places to base yourself to see the opposite side of the island, with the most common being Santo Domingo, Balgue & Santa Cruz. Rent a bike or if you're confident enough a moped/motorbike/quad bike (yes, there are lots of options!), and explore this prehistoric world with at least one of the twin volcanoes constantly being in your view.. Get lost on the winding roads that circle the island, as tropical birds fly high above, and the overpowering noise of the deafening howler monkeys surrounds you. Visit the majestic natural pools of Ojo de Agua, and treat yourself to a rum filled coconut before jumping into the San Ramos Waterfall that clings to the side of one of the volcanoes!
Now its time to test yourself by climbing one of the twin volcanoes! With the almost perfectly coned Volcan Concepcion being the most popular of the two, it is actually the hardest but if you fancy the challenge, there are incredible views at the top waiting for you. The second volcano being the cloud forest covered Volcan Maderas, which is also home to a misty crater lake at the summit! Both hikes are not to be underestimated, make sure that you have plenty of water, sturdy footwear and each of these should only be attempted with a local guide.
Once your adventurous appetite has been satisfied, its time to dig in to the local cuisine at the many comedors dotted around each town, before grabbing an ice cold Tona and racing to find your perfect spot to watch the most incredible sunset!
It's hard not to get excited about reliving our time here, and we cannot recommend this place highly enough, it just has to be on your Nicaraguan bucket list!
Before you visit for yourself, here is a look from behind the lens..
