¡Bienvenido a Cahuita & Puerto Viejo!
After much deliberation of which National Park to visit in Costa Rica, toying up between the touristic Manuel Antonio and the almost untouched Cahuita. We chose the latter, hugging the Caribbean coast this little gem is a real treat for the wandering traveller!
A small town that is blessed with small eateries (local restaurants called soda's), beautiful beaches and more importantly, the Cahuita National Park! The main highlight here is the fact that it is so untouched, you can wander through the dusty paths all by yourself and witness the animals in their natural habitat.. Spot the spider monkeys swinging from tree to tree, hear the deafening roar of the howler monkeys, gaze at the colourful toucans and keep your eyes peeled for all of the tree hugging sloths! Although the array of wildlife isn't the only thing to see here, Cahuita is also blessed with pristine sandy beaches that are just metres away from the jungle path, as each opening in the trees reveals the paradiselike views of leaning palm trees stretching over golden sands, dipping into the Caribbean Sea.
Once you can pull yourself away from Cahuita's natural beauty, there is so much more to see along Costa Rica's Caribbean coast! Our next stop was the reggae inspired coastal town of Puerto Viejo, again this town is filled with indescribably beautiful beaches and a contagious Caribbean vibe that fills the air around you, as well as the lingering smell of jerk chicken that is.. Rent a bike and cycle down the coast to find your perfect beach (check out Playa Negra & Punta Uva), and spend the day exploring this little piece of paradise! This town is also known for its night life, with a much bigger backpacker population than neighbouring Cahuita, this is the place to let your hair down and sample some of the ice cold beers as the sun sets over the beach!
However, the big attraction for us was the Jaguar Rescue Centre in Puerto Viejo, this place was truly incredible, a home to hundreds of tropical wildlife who have not only been rescued but are now being rehabilitated back to full health, ready for some to be sent back into the wild! Our favourite part of the rescue centre and the same is for so many others are the sloths, (including baby orphan sloths!) you can get up close and personal with these fascinating animals and learn so much about them!
Before you visit these beautiful places, here is a look from behind the lens..
